Fresh

Sundance 2022

I'm a sucker for movies with long prologues or pre-title sequences. This one clocks in at 35 minutes. Bravo. Because it's best not to know anything about this one, I will be very brief in my description. Written by Lauryn Kahn and directed by Mimi Cave, “Fresh” is a horror thriller that stars Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar JonesJones plays Noa, a young woman on the search for love but frustrated by her dating apps experience. However, a chance encounter at a local store sees Noa falling head over heels for Steve (Stan). As the two try to take their relationship to the next level by retreating to a secluded cabin, Noa discovers a grisly secret that Steve has been hiding behind his winning smile. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan give excellent performances and have great chemistry on screen together. JoJo Gibbs and Dayo Okeniyi also are exceptional in support, even with their limited screen time. “Fresh” is an absolute blast. It's a taut little horror thriller with a harsh commentary on the contemporary dating landscape. Surprising and fun, I'll be looking out for more from director Mimi Cave, as this was an awesome kickoff to my Sundance festival this year.
