Thirteen Lives
August 3rd, 2022 / Kevin Ward
It has been 17 years since the release of Ron Howard's “Apollo 13,” which depicted the real-life rescue of three astronauts. “Thirteen Lives” is a new film that matches the director with another story that captured the hearts and attention of the entire world and took a monumental effort of many to ensure the safe return of just a few. The 2018 rescue of 12 Thai boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave was a remarkable feat that required volunteers from around the world to achieve. “Thirteen Lives” presents a dramatic retelling of these already dramatic events.
“Thirteen Lives” is a truly captivating and emotional experience. The film features a talented cast, including Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell, who deliver powerful performances as Richard Stanton and John Volanthen, two experienced cave divers from the UK who were called upon to help with the rescue efforts. Joel Edgerton's portrayal of Harry Harris, an Australian cave diver with a unique set of skills and crucial to the rescue, is similarly excellent. His character and the decisions he’s tasked with bring an extra layer of depth and complexity to the already incredible story.
Howard impressively captured the intensity and danger of the situation while maintaining a visually appealing atmosphere despite the dark and narrow setting. The underwater camera work is truly impressive for that reason. Shrewdly, “Thirteen Lives” does not rely on over-dramatization or exaggeration to tell this incredible story - the true events speak for themselves. I did happen to see the recent documentary “The Rescue” as well. While I tend to prefer real footage over the dramatized versions in most cases, in this instance, both “The Rescue” and “Thirteen Lives” are well worth watching. “Thirteen Lives” feels like a long-awaited return to form for Ron Howard while also honoring the bravery and heroism of the rescue team and celebrating the power of human resilience and determination.
