Top Gun: Maverick
May 23rd, 2022 / Kevin Ward
I was dubious at first. I thought for sure that the hype had to be overblown--possibly even a Scientological conspiracy. But, no. "Top Gun: Maverick" is truly exceptional. The storyline is captivating and enthralling. The aerial combat sequences are awe-inspiring and unlike anything seen before. It's a quintessential, crowd-pleasing blockbuster and showcases why we go to the movies in the first place.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, this follow-up to the 1988 classic finds US Navy Captain Pete Mitchell, AKA Maverick, living his best life as a top test pilot. But when a (non-descript) national threat emerges, Maverick is reassigned to Top Gun as an instructor and is tasked with training the next generation of elite fighter pilots for an intensely challenging suicide mission. But before he can lead these brilliant graduates, he must confront his past and his contentious relationship with Goose's son, Rooster, one of the very pilots he's charged with training.
The script surpasses the original in almost every way imaginable. Maverick's relationships have much more depth which lends the film a genuine pathos. He's not just a cocksure fighter pilot looking to prove he's the best. The references to the original movie are refreshingly subtle in a time when franchises and legacy sequels rely heavily on nostalgia for easy success. Most importantly, the stakes are higher, making the viewing experience even more intense and thrilling, particularly during the climactic final act. Even though Maverick's name is in the title, the feeling that this could be his last mission absolutely feels like a possibility--even when, deep down, we know it's not.
Overall, this movie is an outstanding achievement. Not only does Cruise deliver, but the entire supporting cast does as well. Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, and John Hamm all fit right into this world and suggest there may be a future for this franchise. "Top Gun: Maverick" is a must-see film and is best experienced on the largest screen possible.
