Glass Onion

November 23rd, 2022 / Kevin Ward

Writer and director Rian Johnson has crafted yet another thrilling whodunit featuring the brilliant detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). Sequel to the 2019 breakout hit “Knives Out,” even though this mystery is similarly confined to a “singular” location, the budget has been noticeably leveled up this time. The private Greek island, the lavish mansion, the yacht, and the pool make for a picturesque and cinematic setting.

The story follows Blanc as he attempts to uncover the truth behind a mysterious invitation that led him to this exotic location. Johnson, known for his penchant for upending expectations, does so again here. Knowing that the audience is expecting a murder mystery, for much of the film’s runtime, the real mystery is, "What is the mystery?" As such, the film takes a bit longer to gain momentum than “Knives Out.”

Much of the first act introduces the cast of characters and their potential ulterior motives for being there. Upon arrival, Blanc is introduced to a group of peculiar friends who have gathered at the invitation of billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) for their annual reunion. The guest list includes Miles' former business partner, Andi Brand (Janelle Monáe), the current governor of Connecticut, Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), cutting-edge scientist Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr.), fashion designer and former model Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), and her assistant Peg (Jessica Henwick), as well as influencer Duke Cody (Dave Bautista) and his girlfriend, Whiskey (Madeline Cline).

The entire cast is exceptional and is clearly having a ball. Though none of the actors necessarily disappears into their role, half of the fun of these big ensemble films is derived from simply watching all of these stars perform together. The real star here, though, is Johnson’s gift for storytelling. It’s truly remarkable the way he weaves this tale. Every little detail fits perfectly into place, adding depth and meaning to the overall plot. Every seemingly insignificant line of dialogue turns out to be a crucial piece of the puzzle when all is said and done. It's truly a masterclass in storytelling.
