Missing
January 9th, 2023 / Kevin Ward
“Missing” is a captivating mystery/thriller that serves as a spiritual successor to 2018’s “Searching.” The story follows a teenager named June, played by Storm Reid, who must utilize social media and technology creatively to locate her mother, who has vanished under mysterious circumstances while on vacation in Colombia. Directed by Nicholas D. Johnson and Will Merrick, “Missing” also features Nia Long and Ken Leung.
“Missing” utilizes the same storytelling presentation as its predecessor. All perspectives shown are that of computer screens, web browsers, text messages, surveillance footage, face time calls, and webcam footage. It's incredibly impressive how all these non-traditional media elements are wonderfully blended to create a cohesive and engaging story. Each new screen capture expertly unravels this wonderfully gripping mystery. On paper, this method of storytelling sounds like it could be incredibly dull, in part because several other films have taken similar approaches without much success. But I must credit Aneesh Chaganty and the other creatives behind “Searching” and “Missing.” The presentation in these films makes the audience feel like we're the ones conducting the investigation, appealing to the inner internet detective in all of us. But in reality, we have no control. Chaganty and company have the reigns and are taking the audience for a ride with unexpected twists and turns, clever humor, and even some heart-rending moments.
Nia Long, Storm Reid, and Ken Leung are perfect in their respective roles. Each performance feels utterly authentic from the get-go. Considerable effort goes into creating the visual aesthetic to accurately capture the look and feel of the apps and programs we use, but I also want to recognize the sound design, which is also fantastic and even plays a role in how this mystery unfurls. To say any more would likely reveal too much and risk spoiling your movie experience. If you enjoy mysteries, “Missing” is well worth checking out. It is as good as, if not better than, “Searching,” and I will gladly sign up to see more films in this screen-life franchise.
