Hatching
January 22nd, 2022 / Kevin Ward
Sundance 2022
Pretty entertaining feature with some impressive practical effects. The film has a strange vibe, moving from body horror to family drama to coming of age. A young girl named stumbles upon an intriguing egg in the midst of a forest. She brings it back and meticulously cares for it, eagerly awaiting the day it will hatch. However, the egg grows into something far different than she had anticipated. The movie delves into various themes, such as the debate between nature and nurture, the challenges of maturing, the significance of family, and a child's inherent yearning for their mother's validation. Its ominous dark tone makes it an enjoyable midnight flick, but I doubt this will generate much buzz upon release.
