SIFF 2023

"Monica" is a complex drama of familial resentment and forgiveness layered on top of a moving trans experience story. Trace Lysette's captivating performance as Monica is matched only by Patricia Clarkson's portrayal of her (once) estranged mother, who is ailing and nearing the end of her life. Every conversation and interaction has so much nuance. I loved how all of Monica's history and trauma quietly unfurled. The ending felt rather abrupt concluding the film on a somewhat awkward note, but it's a quietly moving film otherwise.
