The Worst Person in the World
January 27th, 2022 / Kevin Ward
Sundance 2022
”The Worst Person in the World” is a beautiful coming-of-age story that happened to pair quite nicely with “Cha Cha Real Smooth” at Sundance this year. Both capture the feeling of falling in love with someone in a different phase of life. Directed by Joachim Trier, the film chronicles the life and times of Julia (Renate Reinsve), a young woman trying to make it in Oslo. As Julia struggles to juggle her work life and romantic escapades, she explores her inner self and attempts to come to terms with who she truly is and what she wants most. Joachim Trier has structured the film into 12 delightful chapters and accentuated some moments with exquisite cinematography. The shots of Julia running through town while the rest of the world stands still are remarkable. At the forefront of it all is Reinsve's brilliant performance as Julia battles indecisiveness, fear, regret, and fear of regret during these four years of self-discovery. It is easily one of the best films to come out within the last year.
