Theater Camp

January 29th, 2023 / Kevin Ward

"Theater Camp" is a light and fun comedy. Its improvisational feel, mockumentary format, and theater production centered plot reminded me of "Waiting For Guffman," a film I absolutely love. When the founder of a New York theater camp falls into a coma, the enigmatic staff has to scramble to keep the camp running. Despite the challenges, they are determined to maintain the camp's spirit and success. Jimmy Tatro portrays the son of the camp's founder, who has been entrusted to the care of the camp. He's a "crypto bro" that knows nothing about theater, and it is truly inspired casting. The song "Girl with an Open Snapple" rocks. Also, this might be the perfect Ben Platt vehicle to help audiences forget about “Dear Evan Hansen.” It's an enjoyable watch, especially for the musical theater lovers out there.
