When You Finish Saving the World

Sundance 2022
In this movie, Finn Wolfhard's Ziggy is an insufferable character, a 17-year-old musician preoccupied only with live-streaming his folk rock to his online fans. His mother, Evelyn (Julianne Moore), is equally self-centered. Both actors give convincing performances, so much so that I want to punch them by the movie's end. I empathized hard with the dad, though. His family didn't come to his Lifetime Achievement Award, and he makes them duck for dinner the next night. Although Jesse Eisenberg shows potential as a director, the story did not resonate with me in any way. I found it too large of an obstacle to root for these completely self-absorbed characters. Flip a coin on this one.
